How Transformers Control Voltage Phase

How transformers control voltage phase

Explanation of How Transformers Control Voltage Phase for Optimal Operation of Equipment

Transformers are used to control voltage phase power sources.  They alter voltages from one voltage level to another.  Transformers can step up voltage or lower voltage in order to regulate the needed power load for specific equipment and machinery.  Voltage is the measurement of the strength of electrons flowing through a wire.  Most of the time, transformers will step down the voltage that goes to your power input sources in residential dwellings.  However in businesses or manufacturing plants, a large motor operating bigger applications such as large pumps or drilling equipment will use a transformer that will control voltage phase by stepping up the voltage for a higher power load.

In a transformer, there is a core engulfed by two windings, a primary and a secondary.  These windings are usually made from copper wiring or materials that are good conductors of electrical current.  A changing current in the primary winding produces an alternating field in the core.  The core multiplies the electrical field and couples the flux through the secondary winding.  This produces the alternating current in each of the secondary coils.  See the diagram above for a clearer picture of how electrical current can be alternated to a desired voltage.

When operating equipment, systems must have the correct voltage for optimal load requirements.  If electrical voltage is too strong, it can permanently damage equipment because of electrical overload, which causes burnout.  If voltage is too low, machinery struggles during operation to meet load requirements because of inadequate power.  Equipment becomes worn out due to unbalanced power sources, and breakdown occurs resulting in high repair expense.

Transformers control voltage phase amazingly well.  The voltage that runs through power lines can be as high as 155,000 to 765,000 volts.  Thanks to transformers controlling voltage phases, residential and manufacturing facilities both get the operating power that is specifically designed for their electrical power inputs sources.
